Transportation of the goods in bulk via road, rail, ship or air is called freight.

So, exactly what the freight shipping is about?

Exactly, freight shipping revolves around the transportation of cargo across the world via air, land or sea between businesses.
Freight shipping acts as a backbone for many industries operations which are in the need of goods and other aspects required in the supply chain from neighboring or foreign countries.

The freight shipping market numbers in 2019

Considered as the major earning source of the US economy. In 2017 alone, we spent around 21 billion dollars and moved around 2300 billion ton-km in domestic transportation. Acc. to u.s. department of transportation, there were almost 780000 for-hire carriers, 700000 private carriers and 80000 other carriers of which 91 percent operate 6 trucks.
Overall freight ton is expected to grow to 35 percent between 2016 and 2027. Truckload volumes are expected to grow 2 percent annually till 2022 and private carriers to grow 2.3 percent annually.
And the future of freight shipping in numbers is very bright.

Classification of freight shipment.

Shipment being larger than 30x30x30 in inches or over 150 in pounds is considered right to be freight.
Delivery shipments can be loaded onto truck or flood loaded which then be hand unloaded or by using dock or forklift.
As per standards, a normal truck can load max of 26 pallets with dimensions of 48x40x80 max, oversized would be considered a double-stacked pallet.
Elevated docs are equipped in warehouses for loading and unloading using forklift or loading equipment.

Different types of freight shipments

There are three types of freight shipments
  1. Full Truckload — FTL containers can transport 24 to 26 pallets. FTL shipments are the direct ones from the pickup to the destination.
  2. Less than Truckload — This one is between 1 and 6 pallets and is the most common type of truckload. Inventory is often transferred onto different ships.
  3. Partial Truckload — Shipment is between 6 and 12 pallets. Once the inventory is loaded onto the truck, the shifting possibility is low then.
